Telangiectasias & Spider Veins
Telangiectasias, also called spider veins or angioectasias, are small dilated blood vessels that occur close to the surface of the skin—usually on the face, around the nose, cheeks and chin. Though most telangiectasias are harmless, you may choose to have these red, spidery clusters removed for aesthetic reasons. Fortunately, with the help of our Sclerotherapy Nurse Lisa Roberge, telangiectasia removal can be successfully either with a vascular laser, or sclerotherapy injections.
How Telangiectasias Happen
Though the causes behind telangiectases are largely unknown, experts think they could be related to sun exposure, due to the fact they usually appear in places – like the face – that see more sunlight than other parts of the body. Other possible causes include: alcoholism, which can impact the flow of blood in vessels; pregnancy, which can apply large amounts of pressure on venules (i.e., very small blood vessels); and lastly, aging, which often sees blood vessels start to weaken throughout the body.
Prevention: Your First Line of Defense
Because sun damage may be a cause, you can help to prevent telangiectases by protecting your skin from overexposure. In other words: cover up with protective clothing, always use a physical sun block, like those in the Jane Iredale makeup line, and, as much as possible, stay out of the sun for prolonged periods of time. Since aging, too, may be behind this condition, you may wish to consult with an anti-aging skin specialist about getting started on a medical-grade skincare system—one that includes products that introduce age-appropriate combinations of skin protection, strengthen the skin's barrier function and increase the body's natural wound-healing response and collagen production.
Telangiectasia Removal
A consultation with our certified vein specialist will determine the best course of treatment for your telangiectasias. One possible treatments for spider veins, especially those on the face, include the use of a vascular laser set to target only the abnormal blood vessels while sparing the surrounding normal skin structures. During the treatment process, a beam of light from the laser is absorbed in the blood flowing through the targeted areas. The heat from the laser coagulates the blood and seals the vessel for visibly clearer skin. Another option is sclerotherapy, which is a precise injection of a natural sclerosing solution directly into the vessels, which causes them to close up, redirecting the blood into normal vessels.
