- Reduced neck fullness
- Reduction of large folds of excess skin and fat

The Neck Lift Journey
#DocTalkWithDrB: Neck Lift Surgery
Fullness in the neck and chin area can be a common concern for many people. The excess skin and fat that usually result from aging, weight loss, and sometimes just purely because of genetics, can be stubborn and undesired for some. Neck lift surgery can be an ideal option for patients with these concerns.
Surgery Techniques
Types of Neck Lifts
At 8 West Clinic, we focus on an individualized approach to ensure that your neck lift surgery results are optimally crafted for your unique anatomy and no one else’s. By possessing deep skill in a variety of types and techniques to achieve an ideal surgical neck lift, we offer options for all different kinds of neck concerns. Below are some examples of different types of Neck Lifts to help you understand your options.
Platysmaplasty
Appropriate for patients who would benefit from a substantial tightening of the neck area. A small incision is made just below the chin where it is very difficult to see once healed, and redundant tissue in the area is trimmed and/or tightened to recontour the neck and mentocervical angle.
This can include excess fat and platysma muscle. Further neck reshaping can also be achieved effectively with techniques that call for strategically placed sutures.
Neck Liposuction and FaceTite™
For patients that are looking for a minimally invasive procedure to address mild to moderate signs of excess fat and loose skin, FaceTite can be an ideal minimal-downtime option. This technology utilizes radiofrequency-assisted lipolysis to tighten and contour areas like the neck.
Through a tiny incision made under the chin, a small handpiece is passed under the skin layer to deliver wavelengths of energy, which work to precisely target and heat excess fat cells while stimulating collagen at the same time. In a liquefied state, the heated fat can then be liposuctioned from the area, but is otherwise eliminated by the body’s natural metabolic processes. The full effect of the skin tightening and fat elimination results will be seen after a few months of treatment.
Deep Plane Neck Lift
Not to be confused with a Deep Plane Facelift, a Deep Plane Neck Lift is a more extensive type of neck lift for patients with significantly more fullness affecting the shape of the neck area, and whose concerns are not related to skin laxity.
Done through tiny incisions under the chin, this procedure goes more extensive than a basic platysmaplasty to substantially debulk the deeper fat layers, muscle layers, and sometimes glandular tissue. The platysma muscle is then tightened into its newly contoured position to reshape the neck.
Comprehensive Deep Plane Facelift with Deep Plane Neck Lift
Dr. Buonassisi’s Deep Plane Facelift with Deep Plane Neck Lift is essentially a combination of his Comprehensive Deep Plane Facelift paired with a Deep Plane Neck Lift.
This goes beyond a basic deep plane facelift by including a deep debulking of the complex structures in the neck and is ideal for patients who have age-related volume loss and skin laxity across the face and neck—but also significant fullness and shape-related concerns in the neck.
Neck Liposuction with Platysmaplasty
In some cases, patients can have a lax platysma muscle but may also benefit from the removal of excess fat using liposuction. Extra fat under the skin is gently removed with liposuction through tiny incisions, and when done in combination with a platysmaplasty, the neck is able to be tightened.
It’s usually ideal to preserve some fat in the neck area for the best results and most patients will not require liposuction. There are many ways to define the neck, chin, and jawline area, with neck liposuction being just one option in a skilled surgeon's toolkit.
Z-Plasty Neck Lift
Patients concerned with a laxity of skin commonly referred to as a “turkey neck" may benefit from a Z-plasty, which substantially tightens the skin in the area when there is no need to debulk some of the deeper underlying tissues in the neck. With excess skin trimmed away and carefully sutured in a “Z” shape under the chin, this surgery is best for patients who can tolerate a slightly larger incision and scar.
When patients’ concerns also include laxity in the overall midface, lower face, and jawline areas, a Comprehensive Deep Plane Facelift would more effectively addresses all of these in one procedure for the most holistic, natural-looking result.
Comprehensive Deep Plane Facelift with Neck Lift
This procedure is a type of long incision facelift that addresses age-related volume loss and skin laxity across all of the midface, lower face, and excess skin in the neck area. This is an ideal option for patients who may be seeing loose skin in the neck but also require a more holistic rejuvenation across both face and neck for a balanced and natural-looking final result.
When patients’ concerns include a lax platysma muscle and they carry more fullness in the neck area as opposed to just lax skin, a Deep Plane Neck Lift may be more suitable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is a candidate for neck lift surgery?
Those looking at Neck Lift surgery typically are noticing advanced sagging in their chin and neck, either due to age, weight-loss or genetics. Light sagging, and looking to define the angle of your chin and neck usually means that Platysmaplasty is your ideal treatment. If you are experiencing sagging, folds and wrinkling, as well as a loss of separation between the neck and the chin/jaw, this typically requires a Z Plasty Neck Lift. A complimentary pre-assessment with our patient care managers will determine which procedure is most suitable for you.
How long does it take to recover from neck lift surgery?
Depending on which technique is performed, recovery times will vary. As the Z Plasty Neck Lift is more invasive, you will be required to wear a compression garment for several weeks after surgery. Swelling will reduce enough to see the complete results of your Neck Lift between 3-4 weeks post-surgery. With Platysmaplasty, the recovery is shorter, with the dressings being able to be removed 24 hours post-surgery. The full results are visible 7-10 days after surgery. A set of comprehensive pre and post-surgery instructions will be explained verbally, and reiterated in writing for you. Our patient care managers are also available to answer any questions you may have, at any time.
How is neck lift surgery performed?
Dr. Thomas Buonassisi has two different techniques he will perform with Neck Lift surgery, depending on the anatomy of your neck muscle, how the skin and fat has formed, and your aesthetic goals. Platysmaplasty is a less invasive technique focused on reducing the mento-cervical angle, which is the angle created when you trace from your chin, to your neck, then to your collar. Z Plasty Neck Lift is more invasive, as it also includes removing any excess skin and fat for an added level of definition. Both techniques are quite different in how they are performed, but both are often combined with a Face Lift. A Face Lift may also provide a subtle lift of the neck, and may be suggested instead of a neck lift if it is more suitable for your goals. During your pre-consultation process, Dr. Buonassisi will review your photos and make suggestions based on a number of factors and suggest the best surgery options for you.
