Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a candidate for labiaplasty?

There are many reasons why one may consider labiaplasty, as each person and their labia is unique. For some, it’s due to the physical discomfort that may come with an enlarged labia or excess tissue that may extend outside of the labia majora. While for others, it may be for aesthetic-related reasons. People who choose labiaplasty surgery may take issue with some or all of these areas:

  • Physical vaginal discomfort when exercising
  • Difficulty with maintaining vaginal hygiene leading to frequent urinary tract infections
  • Discomfort from pinching or pulling sensations during sexual activities
  • Feeling uncomfortable in swimsuits or in tight fitting clothing, like yoga pants
  • Dissatisfaction with the physical appearance of excess labia skin
  • Feeling that their labia doesn’t look the way they’d like or feel

Labiaplasty appeals to people of any age, and if you can relate to these feelings of discomfort or self-consciousness, this surgery may be the right procedure for you.

How is labiaplasty performed?

For some, the inner labia are longer than the outer labia, and labiaplasty surgery involves trimming the excess labia minora tissue that protrudes past the labia majora. Dr. Buonassisi will carefully measure the labia before marking them, to then (while you are under anesthesia) carefully trim excess tissue away, and closing the incisions with sutures. The full details of how this surgery is performed will be best discussed with your patient care manager during your complimentary pre-consultation and in your surgical consultation with the doctor.

How long does it take to recover from labiaplasty?

When it comes to healing, post-operative labiaplasty pain is minimal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication or a prescription. You will experience significant swelling and some bruising after your surgery. Most of the swelling will go down after 2 weeks but it typically takes about 6 weeks for all of the swelling to subside.

Those who are diligent about following Dr. Buonassisi’s post-operative care instructions may be able to resume some non-strenuous activities 3 to 4 days after surgery, and you’ll be back to your regular exercise and activity after about 4 weeks.

Once fully recovered, labiaplasty will not interfere with normal vaginal sensations, the ability to have intercourse, or the ability to have orgasms.
