Family Support for Young Adults Having Cosmetic Surgery
What do I like to see from a patient and their family in a teen who's considering rhinoplasty? I like the family to come to the consultation with the patient; I think it's very important. Even though someone who's 15 or 16 may be very mature, I think it's important to have a supportive family so I'd like to have at least one of the parents come, if not both. Sometimes it's really nice to see a sibling come for support as well. I think this can often help them to make decisions on the changes they want to make, and the degree of change they might want to make as well. It's good to have a little bit of support and feedback from your family members.
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that does require some downtime and some post operative care and downtime at home to recover. Having emotional support from the family is very helpful. The family needs to be in agreement with the surgery as well in order for the whole process to be a healthy one.
