Buzzword: Liquid Rhinoplasty
A liquid rhinoplasty uses dermal fillers to subtly build up the nose. The procedure can be done in as little as half an hour and while the results are immediate, they are only temporary. "It's a quick fix that requires on-going injectable treatments to maintain the results" said Dr. Thomas Buonassisi, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, and 8 West Clinic Founder.
''The natural movement of the face, particularly the nose causes the dermal filler that was used during the treatment to be reabsorbed into the body and the results to diminish and disappear over time,'' said Dr. Buonassisi. ''Depending on the patient, results usually last between 9 and 12 months.''
What You Need to Know
''The biggest difference between surgical and non-surgical rhinoplasty is that in non-surgical rhinoplasty with dermal filler you are only adding volume - making it bigger,'' said Dr. Buonassisi. ''I think it's great for a patient who has a small depression or a tiny hump on their nose that you can camouflage by using some filler either above or below it.''
A surgical rhinoplasty results in making more dramatic permanent improvements to the intricate details of the nose as a whole, which is typically more often desired, he said.
''Two issues come to my mind when I am discussing liquid rhinoplasty with a patient,'' said Dr. Buonassisi. ''The first is the longevity of the results - I want a patient to feel their best for as long as possible. I don't want someone feeling self-conscious nine months out - and questioning if they are looking their best for a few weeks or months before they return for a follow-up procedure. Plus there is a financial cost to those repeat visits.
''My second concern is leaving the patient as healthy as possible. There are so many delicate pieces to nasal anatomy. It may be counterintuitive to consider surgery, but long term it can be better for the vasculature of the nose - especially the tip.''
How Non Surgical Rhinoplasty Works
At 8 West Clinic the procedure begins with numbing the nose, the filler is injected into the appropriate area and then massaged into place.
Who It's For
A liquid rhinoplasty can meet the needs of some patients who desire a very specific result and aren't ready for a permanent change.
''I don't think it's really an alternative to rhinoplasty, but it is something that can soften the look of a nose on the right patient,'' said Dr. Buonassisi.
