About Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty may be appealing to women who experience physical discomfort due to their labia, and who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their labia. After a labiaplasty, women are thrilled with their results for many reasons, including:
- Less physical pain of discomfort when exercising
- Greater confidence in tight-fitting clothing or swimwear
- Better vaginal hygiene and health
- Improved sexual pleasure
What is Labiaplasty?
A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that alters the labia minora (inner labia), with the surgical goal to decrease the size of the inner labia to keep it surrounded by the outer labia and looking naturally tucked into place. There are a variety of reasons why some women have longer labia, including genetics, childbirth, and aging. Labiaplasty effectively removes excess inner labia tissue to keep it contained neatly inside the outer labia.
Who is Labiaplasty For?
There are many reasons why a woman may consider labiaplasty. Some are physical reasons that come with enlarged labia or excess tissue that hangs outside of the labia majora, while others are aesthetic-related. Women who choose labiaplasty struggle with some or all of these areas:
- Physical vaginal discomfort when exercising
- Difficulty with maintaining vaginal hygiene leading to frequent urinary tract infections
- Discomfort from pinching or pulling sensations during sexual activities
- Feeling uncomfortable in swimsuits or tight in tight fitting clothing, like yoga pants
- Dissatisfaction with the physical appearance of excess labia skin
- Feeling that their labia doesn't look the way they'd like or feel
- Labiaplasty appeals to women of any age, and if you can relate to these feelings of discomfort or self-consciousness, labiaplasty may be the right procedure for you.
How is Labiaplasty Performed?
For some women, the inner labia are longer than the outer labia, and labiaplasty surgery involves trimming the excess labia minora tissue that protrudes outside of the labia majora. Labiaplasty is performed under anesthetic. Dr. Buonassisi will carefully measure the labia before marking them, carefully trimming excess tissue away, and closing the incisions with sutures. The full details of how this surgery is performed will be best discussed with you during your complimentary pre-consultation.
What to Expect with Labiaplasty Surgery
Many women have similar questions prior to labiaplasty. Will I lose feeling if I have a labiaplasty? How long does it take for labiaplasty to heal? When can I go back to work after a labiaplasty? These are all valid questions and it's normal to want to know what to expect before you make a decision about surgery. Dr. Buonassisi and his patient care managers will discuss and answer all these questions, and any others that you may have, during the consultation process. When it comes to healing, post-operative labiaplasty pain is minimal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication or a prescription. You will experience significant swelling and possibly some bruising after your surgery. Most of the swelling will go down after 2 weeks but it typically takes about 6 weeks for all of the swelling to subside. Women who are diligent about following Dr. Buonassisi's post-operative care instructions may be able to resume some non-strenuous activities 3 to 4 days after surgery, and you'll be back to your regular exercise and activity after about 4 weeks. Labiaplasty does not interfere with normal vaginal sensations, the ability to have intercourse, or the ability to have orgasms.
Additional Treatments for Vaginal Health and Wellbeing
A labiaplasty is often performed as a single surgery, but many women choose to make it part of a holistic combination treatment plan by pairing it with laser vaginal therapy using diVa™ technology. This non-surgical treatment improves dryness, increases sensation, and reduces symptoms of urinary incontinence. Our expert laser specialists will tailor a treatment plan that's unique to your individual needs and vaginal rejuvenation goals. We also stock Ladysuit, a range of skincare products that are specifically designed for the labia, to help with dryness, pH balance, strong odour, and overall texture of the labia.
