When it comes to injectables, many patients aren't aware of the different kinds, and are therefore unsure of what type would be the best to treat their age-related symptoms. If you are interested in getting injectables, be sure to learn about the different kinds available. We sat down with our nurse injector at 8 West Clinic to get the rundown to help you discover what type of injectables are right for you.
Fillers vs. Neuromodulators
Injectables can be categorized into two different types, namely dermal fillers and neuromodulators, each of which treat different symptoms and work in different ways. When considering injectables, it's important to first understand the difference between the two.
Dermal fillers: Dermal fillers provide a temporary solution to filling out and plumping certain parts of the face, such as the lips and cheeks to address facial volume loss associated with aging.
Neuromodulators: Often confused with dermal fillers, neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport have a different function that softens dynamic wrinkles as opposed to adding volume the way dermal fillers do. Neuromodulators work to block the function of the muscles in certain areas of the face to smooth out and prevent worsening of existing wrinkles. Areas that can be treated with Botox or Dysport include: crow's feet, the area between your eyebrows, and frown lines.
Injections for Different Areas of the Face
Often the type of injection you will receive, whether a dermal filler or a neuromodulator, will be determined by the problem you want to solve and which area of the face it exists. There are certain areas of the face where a particular injection will not apply. For example, the lines between your eyebrows are not a candidate for dermal fillers. The best way to treat these wrinkles is with botox that relaxes the muscles, smoothing the area and making the wrinkles less prominent over time. Your injector should be weary about injecting dermal filler into the lower part of the face, such as the jowls and mouth area, as this can result in an unnatural-looking appearance with a bulky lower face. To lift the lower part of the face, you're better off injecting dermal filler into the cheek area to take pressure off your nasolabial fold.
Different Types of Dermal Fillers and Neuromodulators
In addition to the different categories of injections, there are also many different types and brand names of both dermal fillers and neuromodulators. Each type and brand has a slightly different texture. You should discuss the different options with an experienced injector to decide which one is best for you.
