The vast majority of patients agree that the small degree of discomfort that is over in a matter of minutes⁠ is 100% worth it. How long your results will last depends on factors such as the type and amount of product used, what treatment areas they were injected in, and how fast your body might metabolize the product. Longevity is not the same for everyone, but a general rule of thumb is that Botox or Dysport wrinkle relaxers usually last for approximately 3-4 months, while hyaluronic acid fillers like those from the Juvéderm and Restylane families may last anywhere from 6-18 months. Hyaluronic acid fillers that are intended to mimic bone and are placed in areas like the chin, for instance, are structured more densely and will often last longer than softer fillers that may be used for areas like the lips. Your treatment provider will discuss product longevity with you in your consultation.

As with any medical procedure, risks come with any cosmetic injectable treatment and is the reason safety is so crucial. There are a number of FDA-approved wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers with a long history of clinical success and a high safety profile, and we utilize several types of these products that are often specially designed for certain treatment areas. They are all temporary products that are made of botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid, poly-L-lactic acid, or deoxycholic acid and can be safely metabolized by the body. Some of these pharmaceutical brands may sound familiar, and include Botox, Dysport, Juvéderm, Restylane, Stylage, Sculptra, or Belkyra. The specific areas of your lips that are injected will depend on your consultation and objectives. Typical areas include: The Red (or Vermillion): Placing dermal filler into this area plumps it up, making it either project forwards more or increasing the vertical height of the lip. The Lip Margin (or Vermillion Border): For patients whose lip border is poorly defined, placing filler along the edges of the lips looks really lovely. The Cupid’s Bow: Filler can be used to accentuate or de-accentuate a cupid’s bow. Aging Areas: As we grow older, it's inevitable that we begin to lose volume in our perioral region. Dermal filler strategically placed in and around the lip area can be used to recreate shape and restore volume, giving structure and lift back to the lips in a natural manner.

As you will learn in your consultation, some risks do come with any lip filler treatment, which is why safety is so crucial. There are a number of FDA-approved dermal fillers that have a long history of success and a high safety profile, and we utilize several types of these filler products specially designed for the lips when doing lip injections. They are all temporary products that are made of hyaluronic acid (a substance that is naturally-occurring in the body), as opposed to permanent and semi-permanent products that are irreversible. Your consultation will include a discussion of which product will work best for you and your objectives.

Lip fillers are a medical procedure, and only physicians can have access to the safe, FDA-approved pharmaceutical dermal filler products. So, any medical professional doing your lip injections must be working under a doctor. On top of this, knowledge, experience, and specialization with injectable procedures matter. Be sure to not only confirm your treatment provider's qualifications, but also look for examples of their work in before and after photos, as well as reviews from other patients' experiences. You may have a dissolvable stitch poking out. This is not dangerous but can be irritating. Internal rhinoplasty stitches are often used inside your nose during surgery. They dissolve roughly 10 days later – but sometimes not uniformly – meaning one might hang around a little longer and start to irritate you. You could notice a stitch up to 6 months after surgery. No, your surgeon did not forget that stitch in there by accident. If your stitch is bugging you, please call your surgeon’s office and let them know. They should schedule you an appointment to have the suture trimmed. In the meantime, please do not pick or tug at it, as this may irritate you nose or cause an infection.

Experienced rhinoplasty surgeons will often over rotate the tip on purpose since they plan for it to fall to it’s intended position in the post operative healing period. They expect that swelling will make it look higher than it will actually be once healed. This planned over rotation should last about 3 – 4 weeks, or a little longer in some patients. So, if you are early on in your recovery period, please don’t be concerned. This is one of the side effects of swelling that will resolve itself over time.

While there are a number of different techniques when it comes to Rhinoplasty, when reshaping or changing the nose, the work is primarily done to the cartilage and bone that form the structure of your nose. Dr. Buonassisi performs both open and closed Rhinoplasty, ensuring that any scarring is minimal to imperceptible. Open Rhinoplasty is performed at the base of the nose, where a small incision is made across the columella – the area between your nostrils. After the incision is made, the skin is very gently raised to expose nasal bones and cartilage so that the required changes can be made. The incision is then strategically sealed using sutures to ensure that any scarring is minimal, and disguised in natural creases of the nose. Unlike open Rhinoplasty, closed Rhinoplasty is less-commonly performed by Dr. Buonassisi, and is a surgery performed inside the nose, through small incisions in the nostrils. This is where Dr. Buonassisi will carefully and skilfully craft the bone and cartilage to achieve the desired result. Which technique is used, and how Dr. Buonassisi will perform the surgery (open or closed) is dependant on a number of unique factors, and will be discussed in detail upon your consultation with him. Whichever method is used will be chosen because it will be the ideal way to achieve your goals.

Very common questions that people ask are “how long is the downtime?” or “how long is the healing process?”. Most patients are then surprised by the answer, as recovery from rhinoplasty is easier than they expect. Most patients will take 1-2 weeks off work or school, and are able to work or study from home in the early days of recovery. Your cast is removed 1 week after surgery, but be prepared to still see bruising and swelling on cast removal day – the exciting part though is that you will get the first glimpse of your new nose. During the second week, you can expect most of the bruising to dissipate, but it always varies from patient to patient. It is also important to keep in mind that it will take a year for everything to heal and set for you to see your final result. While Rhinoplasty is a very popular cosmetic surgery, not everyone is a candidate for Rhinoplasty. The most important part of the process in deciding your candidacy is your complimentary pre-consultation with a Patient Care Manager. They will discuss your Rhinoplasty goals and offer a photo review to determine if this surgery is the right option for you. After this pre-consultation is complete, and you and your Patient Care Manager have decided that Rhinoplasty could be right for you, they will then book an in-person (or virtual) consultation with Dr. Buonassisi. This depends on which technique is required to achieve the desired Facelift type. Facelifts use two main techniques: 1) A SMAS Facelift targets the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS), which is a layer of tissue that lies deep beneath the skin. Focusing on the lower two-thirds of the face, a SMAS facelift addresses issues like sagging skin, jowls, excess fat, hollowed cheeks, and loose skin around the chin. A SMAS facelift trims and removes fat and excess skin and tightens the muscles of the lower face. 2) A Deep Plane Facelift targets the the area that lies between the SMAS and the deeper layer of facial muscles. With a deep plane facelift, Dr. Buonassisi moves only the layer under the muscle and leaves the skin attached to the muscle. Keeping the muscle attached to the skin avoids skin pulling or tightness so you’ll have tension-free, natural-looking results.

A candidate for Facelift surgery will likely notice moderate-to-pronounced signs of aging, such as very lax skin, loss of volume, and fat deposits that have fallen or disappeared. There is no one-size-fits-all candidate for Facelift, and our patient care managers can help determine your candidacy in a complimentary pre-assessment. They can answer any questions you have, and conduct a photo review with Dr. Buonassisi to confirm which procedures are ideal for your goals. Dr. Buonassisi may often refer you to see one of our medical aestheticians for non-surgical treatments, as this option may yield more beneficial results for your individual goals.

Facelift surgeries typically have a downtime of 2-3 weeks, but swelling can last about 3-4 weeks. The incisions are meticulously placed in natural crevices and are nearly imperceivable when fully healed. During recovery, scars and redness are easy to hide with makeup until they begin to fade. The only Facelift procedure that differs from the above is the Mini Lift, which often sees less swelling and bruising and the downtime is typically just one week.

The first thing we typically do to help assess your candidacy is to do what we colourfully refer to as a “duck pout test” or a “fish face test”. Try to suck in your cheeks as if doing a duck pout or a fish face; if you can feel your cheek fat in-between your jaws, this means you are likely a candidate for surgery. People with prominent buccal fat pads often describe themselves as having “chubby cheeks.” While sometimes this can be the result of being overweight, the size of the buccal fat pads may be genetic. Buccal Fat Removal can address concerns of puffy, full cheeks, asymmetrical cheeks, or round cheeks that don't decrease in size with weight loss. Ideal Buccal Fat Removal candidates are typically aged 25 years and older, as by this age the face will usually have slimmed out naturally. If you find that you are above this age and still have full cheeks, Buccal Fat Removal surgery may be a wonderful facial contouring option for you.

As Buccal Fat Removal is a minimally invasive procedure, the downtime and recovery is very little. Visible results after Buccal Fat Removal are immediate, but patients should expect a normal amount of post-operative swelling for 7 to 10 days after surgery.
Patients can typically resume their usual activities, but most take a few days before returning to work or social activities to allow for most of the swelling to subside. Full results of your procedure are usually seen after 2 to 3 months post-surgery as your skin settles into the newly hollowed area where the buccal fat once was.

Buccal Fat Removal is a minimally invasive surgical procedure done under local anesthetic, which many compare to a dental procedure, as you will be in a reclined position with your mouth open. Because the surgery is performed from inside your mouth, there are no visible incisions, stitches, or scars on your face. Dr. Thomas Buonassisi expertly performs this surgery by making small incisions on the inside of the cheeks, just above the upper molars. The tissues of the cheek are then gently separated to expose the buccal fat pads. A precise amount of buccal fat is removed, this amount differs per person and is determined by your individual goals and facial structure. The procedure is then completed by sealing incisions with stitches.

Those looking at Neck Lift surgery typically are noticing advanced sagging in their chin and neck, either due to age, weight-loss or genetics. Light sagging, and looking to define the angle of your chin and neck usually means that Platysmaplasty is your ideal treatment. If you are experiencing sagging, folds and wrinkling, as well as a loss of separation between the neck and the chin/jaw, this typically requires a Z Plasty Neck Lift. A complimentary pre-assessment with our patient care managers will determine which procedure is most suitable for you.

Depending on which technique is performed, recovery times will vary. As the Z Plasty Neck Lift is more invasive, you will be required to wear a compression garment for several weeks after surgery. Swelling will reduce enough to see the complete results of your Neck Lift between 3-4 weeks post-surgery. With Platysmaplasty, the recovery is shorter, with the dressings being able to be removed 24 hours post-surgery. The full results are visible 7-10 days after surgery. A set of comprehensive pre and post-surgery instructions will be explained verbally, and reiterated in writing for you. Our patient care managers are also available to answer any questions you may have, at any time.

Dr. Thomas Buonassisi has two different techniques he will perform with Neck Lift surgery, depending on the anatomy of your neck muscle, how the skin and fat has formed, and your aesthetic goals. Platysmaplasty is a less invasive technique focused on reducing the mento-cervical angle, which is the angle created when you trace from your chin, to your neck, then to your collar. Z Plasty Neck Lift is more invasive, as it also includes removing any excess skin and fat for an added level of definition. Both techniques are quite different in how they are performed, but both are often combined with a Face Lift. A Face Lift may also provide a subtle lift of the neck, and may be suggested instead of a neck lift if it is more suitable for your goals. During your pre-consultation process, Dr. Buonassisi will review your photos and make suggestions based on a number of factors and suggest the best surgery options for you.

Chin Implant surgery is typically ideal for patients who have an under-projected chin, which is commonly a genetic feature. Chin implant surgery can also help make improvements to jowling or lax neck skin, a rounder face shape, or a soft neck or jawline area.

Immediately post-surgery you will have a dressing on the surgery site that will remain in place for two to three days. You will experience some tenderness and post-operative swelling for up to six weeks. Most patients feel a stretched, tight sensation after the surgery, but this usually subsides in a week. Chewing will likely be limited immediately after chin surgery, and it may be more comfortable to shift to a liquid diet. After approximately six weeks, most swelling will subside, and you will begin to see the results of the procedure. We recommend avoiding rigorous activity for the first few weeks, but normal activity can be resumed after approximately 10 days. All details of the procedure and recovery will be explained to you in detail by your Patient Care Manager, and they are available to answer any questions for you throughout the process.

There are several implant types and insertion methods that can be used to achieve chin augmentation. Dr. Buonassisi carefully evaluates the facial profile and through discussion will recommend the size and shape of implant that would best suit the individual. Most commonly a small incision is strategically placed under the chin, so that any scarring is well-hidden. The soft tissues of the chin are then elevated away from the bone, and a small pocket is created under the periosteum (thick layer that envelops the bone) where the implant is inserted. The implant is then secured in the midline by dissolvable stitches.

Most people who feel that they have protruding ears are optimal candidates for otoplasty. Your candidacy for this procedure will be discussed during your complimentary pre-consultation, where a photo review will be conducted, and Dr. Buonassisi will determine whether he can achieve your desired results with surgery.

Otoplasty takes around 2 hours to perform, and is typically done under local anesthetic. The technique used will vary depending on what is causing the ear to protrude.

Dr. Buonassisi meticulously creates an incision behind the ear, and excess cartilage and skin may be removed. The cartilage is then folded into the proper position, and secured with stitches. Because of their placements, the incisions are virtually imperceptible, for a natural result.

Recovery from otoplasty requires you to wear a dressing around the ears for the first two weeks post-surgery. It is normal to experience some bruising, discolouration and swelling around the ears. You can resume most normal activities, such as household chores, a brisk walk, or light exercise within a few days after the procedure. You can resume more vigorous, weight-based exercises once the dressing has been removed.

Your patient care manager will have detailed post-operative instructions and will be there to assist you every step of the way. Don't hesitate to reach out to them with any questions you have about the healing process.

The most common procedure is called the Bullhorn Lip Lift, where Dr. Buonassisi removes the skin just below and to the sides of the nostrils and raises the upper lip to the desired position.

Your lip lift procedure takes about 1 hour, and is performed under local anaesthetic, such as lidocaine, to numb the area. This helps to ensure that you are pain-free and experience minimal or no discomfort during your surgery.

Dr. Buonassisi will begin by drawing an outline below your nostrils (resembling a bullhorn shape) to show where he will place the incisions. Dr. Buonassisi will then proceed by removing a tiny strip of skin and tissue, tightening the muscle, and lifting the lip to the desired new position, anchoring the skin to the base of the nose.

He will then complete the surgery by placing dissolvable stitches where the incisions were. These are placed in a strategic way so that any scarring will be disguised in the natural folds and creases of your nose and upper lip.

Lip lift surgery is a highly customizable procedure, and Dr. Buonassisi crafts your surgery based off of your unique facial composition, and with your individual aesthetic goals in mind. Once your procedure is complete, most patients wish to take about 1 week off from work or other social activities to allow any redness and swelling to subside. Swelling and the discreet scar will heal in approximately 2-3 months.

Any redness and scarring can easily be covered with makeup, and we also have a number of scar management options available, such as ProFractional Laser—just ask your patient care manager or Dr. Buonassisi about these during your discussions.

Due to swelling after your surgery, your upper lip may appear fuller and will settle after a couple of months. Because the results of a lip lift are permanent, you’ll come away with long-lasting, natural, and refreshed results the same day.

While lip lifts are becoming increasingly popular, there are very specific factors that determine your candidacy. This is because the lip lift procedure targets only the upper lip, and works by reducing the space between upper lip and the base of the nose (the philtrum).

FaceTite and AccuTite are minimally invasive cosmetic procedures designed to tighten and contour the skin through radiofrequency-assisted lipolysis. Following this, a very small, carefully placed incision is made to allow for the insertion of the device beneath the skin. Radiofrequency-Assisted Lipolysis:

The fat reduction and skin tightening results behind FaceTite and AccuTite are achieved through a process known as radiofrequency-assisted lipolysis. During the procedure, a specialized device is inserted beneath the skin through a small incision. This device emits controlled radiofrequency energy, which has dual benefits. First, it targets and heats excess fat deposits, with this controlled heating causing the fat cells to liquefy. The liquefied fat is then carefully suctioned out as well as naturally eliminated by the body’s metabolic processes, addressing concerns like sagging and contours.

Second, and equally important, the energy stimulates the production of collagen, a key protein responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. As collagen levels increase, the skin tightens naturally over time. The procedure’s precision ensures that the tightening effect is focused on the treated areas, resulting in a more sculpted and youthful appearance without the need for more invasive surgical methods.

Your treatment may take up to an hour. The length of your procedure will depend on the size of the treatment area(s). It is performed under local anaesthetic, such as lidocaine, to numb the area. This helps to ensure that you are pain-free and experience minimal or no discomfort during your procedure.

The FaceTite or AccuTite probe is then inserted through tiny incisions (puncture holes) made in the treatment area, generally below the ear and under the chin for FaceTite. Through this probe, RF heat is sent directly to the subdermal tissue. A surface probe is used externally to ensure the most effective delivery of RF heat to the targeted tissue. Once the area has been thoroughly treated with RF heat, the procedure is over. There is no need for stitches, as the necessary incisions are quite tiny. You will be quite swollen and may experience some bruising immediately following the treatment. You will also be required to wear a compression garment following your treatment as per your surgeon's instructions.

The first few days after the procedure, patients can expect to have some bruising, swelling, redness and tenderness in the treatment area. It is advised to sleep on several pillows to keep your head elevated for at least 2-3 days to help minimize swelling. Any soreness is easily managed by simply taking Tylenol. It typically takes approximately 7-10 days to see the swelling and bruising subside. It is best to minimize talking and chewing and we recommend following a soft diet for the first 48 hours following your procedure.

You must limit physical activity and exposure to excessive heat (sauna, hot tub, hot yoga, fire pits, UV light) for 2 weeks, and avoid alcohol for the first few days.

While some results will be visible shortly after your treatment, the final results will develop over a longer period of time, often 6-9 months, as the body produces more collagen and tightens the skin in the treated area(s). You will be given a compression facial wrap to wear home immediately following your procedure, and will be instructed to wear this around the clock for a few days, and then you can reduce it to 12 hours a day for the next 2 weeks.

Patients who are excellent candidates for these procedures have these concerns as they age or as a result of hereditary factors:

• Droopy or hooded eyelids
• Sagging eyelid skin
• Tired, puffy eyes and under-eye bags
• People who do not have a natural eyelid crease

To determine if you are a candidate for blepharoplasty, our patient care managers are available to help discuss the surgery in more detail and conduct a photo review.

Blepharoplasty (depending on the specific technique) typically takes around 1 hour and is performed under local anesthesia. Blepharoplasty requires removing excess skin and fat to help rejuvenate your appearance, and bring focus back to your beautiful eyes. Dr. Buonassisi will begin the surgery by carefully measuring the skin that needs to be removed. Then, precise incisions are made to remove the skin in such a way that the stitching is hidden within natural creases of the skin. Once the sufficient amount of skin, fat, and/or muscle have been removed and the desired result has been achieved, the stitches are placed to complete the surgery.

As each patient is different, and there are a number of different blepharoplasty techniques to address every concern, a more comprehensive discussion about the surgery will be discussed in your pre-consultation with a patient care manager, followed by your consultation with Dr. Buonassisi.

We suggest that patients take about a week off of work, and about 2 weeks off from strenuous activities and exercise. Most patients are comfortable being back in the public eye after a couple of weeks, but full recovery takes several months. There are no visible scars from the incisions. You can expect to enjoy your results for at least 10 to 15 years, but as you age, your skin will begin to naturally droop over time.

Brow lift surgery takes an average of 1-2 hours. For the endoscopic brow lift approach, Dr. Buonassisi makes a small incision—approximately 2 cm long—in the scalp, behind the hairline. He uses an endoscope (a surgical camera) and special tools to access the brow structures beneath the skin, allowing him to mobilize the various structural layers in the forehead to create a deeper lift across a larger area that isn’t just a skin lift. The mobilized layers are strategically repositioned to create the ideal elevation of the brow, and are then secured with sutures higher up in the scalp with no trimming of skin required. The incision is closed with very fine stitches.

Most patients take at least 1 week off of work to recover from their brow lift. Stitches are removed approximately 1 week after surgery. There are many reasons why one may consider labiaplasty, as each person and their labia is unique. When it comes to healing, post-operative labiaplasty pain is minimal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication or a prescription. You will experience significant swelling and some bruising after your surgery. Most of the swelling will go down after 2 weeks but it typically takes about 6 weeks for all of the swelling to subside.

Those who are diligent about following Dr. Buonassisi’s post-operative care instructions may be able to resume some non-strenuous activities 3 to 4 days after surgery, and you’ll be back to your regular exercise and activity after about 4 weeks.

How exactly your Emsculpt NEO treatment will be performed depends on the area you are having treated. We will ensure that you are as comfortable as possible for the procedure. The paddle-like Emsculpt NEO applicator(s) will be placed over the skin on the treatment area, and secured comfortably with a velcro band.

Preservation rhinoplasty is a subtle, modern approach to modifying the aesthetic appearance of the nose. The primary goal of preservation rhinoplasty is to retain as much of the patient’s original bone and cartilage as possible while improving the general appearance of the nose. The technique is used exclusively for modifying the nasal bridge, while traditional techniques are still required for tip modifications. In the right patient, however, it is a phenomenal technique that can give excellent results. The complex procedure typically involves a combination of techniques such as reducing the width of the nose, narrowing the bridge, refining the tip, and lifting up the angle between the nose and upper lip while ensuring functionality is retained. Through careful incisions and sculpting of the nasal structures particularly with the aid of technologies like the piezo rhinoplasty device, facial feminization rhinoplasty can help soften masculine features and achieve a more harmonious, feminine balance in the face.

Neck liposuction surgery is ideal for people of all ages who are frustrated with the appearance of a fuller neck that lacks definition. This surgery is not appropriate for patients who are looking for an improvement in the lower face area, such as the jawline or jowls—these patients may be candidates for facelift surgery.

For patients who would benefit from liposuction alone, tiny incisions are placed in the neck area where they are easily hidden. Excess fat is gently removed with liposuction. The incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches. A compression garment is worn after surgery to help the skin retract back onto the new neck shape.

Patients with any combination of features including: a lax platysma muscle, excess fat in the neck area, and/or a recessive chin may be candidates for a double chin surgery. Double chin surgery may be appropriate for younger patients under the age of 40 who don’t have any lower face or neck skin laxity. Patients over the age of 40 typically have lower face laxity that would render double chin surgery ineffective. Patients over the age of 40 who have a poor neck angle or double chin are also typically looking for an improvement in the jowls, jawline, and cheek area—making them more ideal candidates for lower facelift surgery.

An incision is placed just underneath the chin where it is easily hidden. The skin of the neck is elevated to expose the underlying fat. If there is extra fat, it is removed either directly or with liposuction. If the patient has a lax platysma muscle, it is tightly bound with sutures. This allows for significant structural support for the neck and a defined neck angle. If the patient’s chin is recessive, a chin implant is used to create a more prominent chin area. The incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches. A compression garment must then be worn diligently for several weeks after the surgery.

If you were born with eyelids that do not have a crease, or your creases are asymmetrical, and you are bothered with the appearance of closed, puffy upper eyelids, double eyelid surgery may be the ideal option for you.

You may be a candidate for double eyelid surgery if you have any of the following physical features:

• Single eyelid (no upper eyelid fold)
• Asymmetrical upper eyelid folds
• Single or asymmetrical eyelid and puffy upper eyelids characterized by excess eyelid skin

At 8 West Clinic, Dr. Thomas Buonassisi performs two different types of double eyelid surgery; the incisional and suture techniques. Which technique is used depends on a number of deciding factors, and depends on the candidacy of each individual patient. During your in-person consultation with Dr. Buonassisi, the technique that is optimal for you will be discussed.

Incisional Technique: Dr. Buonassisi carefully makes fine incisions in the upper eyelid skin, and removes any excess skin and fat that is necessary. The incision is then sealed using stitches, and the surgical scar is hidden in the new eyelid crease. Double eyelid surgery takes approximately 1 hour, and patients can return home the same day.

Suture Technique: Rather than making an incision and removing fat and skin, the suture technique (as the name indicates) utilizes a number of small incisions, and surgical thread being placed throughout the eyelid to create a crease. The suture remains in the eyelid, and will compress the eyelid skin to create the crease. This technique can be revised and altered at a later date, by removing the suture, and repeating the procedure.

A facelift without surgery, also called a liquid facelift, uses a combination of dermal fillers and neuromodulators to treat or prevent signs of aging by smoothing wrinkles and plumping areas that hollow out as we get older.

Carefully placed injections target the specific areas that you’re concerned with, and your treatment plan is fully customizable to your unique anatomy and beautification or anti-aging goals.

A nonsurgical facelift uses a strategic combination of neuromodulators and dermal fillers, and we use only gold-standard injectable products to ensure the best results possible. Double chin injections should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to deoxycholic acid, or if you have a current infection in your chin area.

Double chin injections utilize deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Deoxycholic acid destroys the walls of fat cells when they come in contact with them. Once the walls have been destroyed, they are unable to hold or accumulate fat, resulting in less fullness under the chin.

Your treatment sessions will require you to be in a relaxed, reclined position. Your treatment provider will mark a series of injection points under your chin, which will be in a grid-like pattern. Your injector will then administer multiple injections into these marked points, directly into the submental subcutaneous fat.

Treatment typically lasts no longer than an hour, including an optional topical numbing ointment. During the treatment you will feel a mild stinging sensation at the injection site which may last for a couple of days. The number of injections and treatments required will be customized to the individual patient’s submental fat distribution and treatment goals.

For the week following the treatment, you can expect some stinging and swelling around the injection site. Subsequent treatments usually have less downtime, however most patients find they have some swelling for the week after their treatments. It takes between 4-6 weeks for the deoxycholic acid to work in the body, and for you to begin to start to see the results. It’s important to keep your treatment plan in mind, as just one treatment may not deliver the complete results you are after. Your treatment provider will discuss the process with you, and set your expectations for your results timeline.

As this is quite a common treatment among women, most are considered candidates for this treatment. There are a number of factors that contribute to an increased likelihood of spider veins, such as pregnancy, hormones, sun exposure, and physical inactivity.

The primary factor if someone is a candidate or not is if they have spider veins (not to be confused with varicose veins) that they are self-conscious about and wish to treat. Spider veins are caused when the veins that carry blood back to the heart become damaged or weak. These veins contain a one-way valve that closes once blood has passed through it, ensuring that blood doesn’t flow backwards. If this one-way valve weakens or becomes damaged, which can happen simply by aging, it can result in blood pooling inside the vein. Over time this results in a bulge in the skin that branches out like a spider’s web; thus the name spider veins.

Sclerotherapy treats this by flushing the vein out with a sugar or salt solution, which then causes the blood vessel to collapse and stick together. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue and will fade, resulting in the vanishing of the superficial spider vein.

After treatment you will be required to wear a compression garment during your recovery for one week. You will be able to return to work the same day, but should take it easy for a few days post-procedure (no strenuous exercise). Complete pre- and post-treatment instructions will be provided to you by your injector.

To help prevent future spider veins in other areas, there are a few health tips you can follow:

• Keep active
• Try not to sit for long periods
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Wear compression garments
• Wear sunscreen

Potenza RF microneedling is a non-invasive treatment that can be performed on any part of the face or body that takes only about 30 minutes. The treatment is pain-minimal, but you will have the option for a topical numbing ointment if you would prefer, which takes about 20-30 minutes to take effect prior to treatment.

The treatment has you in a reclined and relaxed position, and the Potenza RF microneedling pen is gently stamped over your treatment area. Much like traditional microneedling, Potenza uses ultra fine needles that rapidly move to penetrate into the dermis to create controlled damage.
