The Benefits of Wrinkle Relaxing Injections

It’s easy to see why neuromodulator injections are such a popular choice among those of us who want a quick and easy way to smooth wrinkles and refresh our appearance. Wrinkle relaxing injections can be used to subtly soften targeted facial muscles to ease dynamic wrinkles that form around the eyes and forehead from making repeated facial expressions like smiling or frowning.

  • Treatment is quick and you can resume your regular activities right after with no downtime
  • Patients enjoy results that last for 3 – 4 months
  • Treatments are customized to your unique facial structure and goals
  • Results leave you looking naturally refreshed
  • Neuromodulators can also be used to smooth dynamic wrinkles post surgery

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a candidate for wrinkle relaxing injections?

Patients wanting neuromodulator injections are often looking to smooth out wrinkles or stop them from forming in the first place. You could argue that everyone is a candidate for neuromodulator injections, not just those with wrinkles as it can also be used as a preventative treatment. Neuromodulator injections can also be utilized for conditions such as tension headaches and overactive sweating. If you’re wondering if wrinkle relaxing injections are for you, ask yourself if you want to prevent or diminish any of these signs of aging:

  • Forehead lines
  • Lines between the brows
  • Tired eyes (non-surgical brow lift)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Downturned lips
  • Chin dimpling
  • Strong masseter muscle (facial slimming or bruxism/grinding teeth)
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating underarms, palms, soles of feet)

During a complimentary consultation at 8 West Clinic, we’ll discuss your individual needs and your facial aesthetic goals. You’ll come away with a comprehensive treatment plan that’s designed just for you.

How are wrinkle relaxing injections performed?

Neuromodulator injections are performed with your cosmetic injector treating targeted areas by administering several micro-droplet injections through a tiny needle directly into the muscles that cause expression lines to form. Your injector will likely have you make certain facial expressions before or throughout the treatment to guide the placement of neuromodulator product.

Knowing precisely how much and where to inject is what makes the difference in achieving results that look and feel natural. Our expert injectors are highly skilled at placing the perfect amounts of neuromodulator product in the perfect areas for optimal results that you’ll love.

The treatment is typically done within minutes, with no topical numbing required.

How do wrinkle relaxing injections work?

Wrinkle relaxing injections, or neuromodulators, are a botulinum toxin, meaning that they work to relax the muscles which they are injected into. Lines and wrinkles are formed from the natural expressions, and are categorized into two different types; dynamic and static.

  • Dynamic Wrinkles are those caused by making certain expressions; the lines by our mouth when laughing and smiling, the creases on your forehead when you frown or are focusing. These lines come and go with your expressions, but after a while can leave more permanent marks on your face.
  • Static Wrinkles are etched more permanently in our skin, and will remain during a neutral facial expression.

When used in small doses, neuromodulators subtly relax the muscles that form lines and wrinkles. This can be used preventatively to slow down the appearance of static lines, and also as treatment for diminishing dynamic lines and softening some static lines—depending on your skin, facial muscles, and severity of the wrinkles. For some patients, it may be beneficial to combine wrinkle relaxing injections with energy-based treatments such as laser skin resurfacing for the most optimal results.

What should I expect with wrinkle relaxing injections?

Most patients begin to see diminished lines and wrinkles within a few days of their neuromodulator treatment, and you’ll see the full results within 14 days.

Each injection treatment takes only a few minutes to complete, and you can return to work or your other normal activities right away. It’s also safe to gently put makeup on within a few minutes of your treatment if you want to cover any redness. Any small red areas will only be visible immediately after the treatment and will reduce in a short period of time post-treatment.

We suggest that people do not perform any strenuous exercise post-treatment, but light cardio is fine. We also ask that people do not lie down for 6 hours post-treatment, as this increases the risk of the product migrating to other muscles/areas.

Wrinkle relaxing injections create smoother skin that lasts for 3 to 4 months for most people before another visit is required.

How long do wrinkle-relaxing injections last?

The results typically last 3 to 4 months, depending on the individual’s metabolism, the treated area, and the product used. Regular maintenance treatments can help prolong the effects.

Can I still make facial expressions after wrinkle-relaxing injections?

Yes! When performed by a skilled injector, wrinkle-relaxing treatments allow for natural movement while reducing wrinkles. The goal is to soften lines, not to create a “frozen” look.

What should I avoid after wrinkle-relaxing injections?

After treatment, avoid rubbing the area, lying down for 4 hours, strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat exposure (like saunas or hot showers) for 24 hours to ensure the best results.

Can I combine wrinkle-relaxing injections with other treatments?

Yes! Many patients combine Botox/Dysport with dermal fillers, microneedling, laser treatments, or facials to achieve a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Your provider can create a customized treatment plan for your goals.

What is botox?

Botox (Botulinum toxin) is an FDA-approved cosmetic injectable used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is classified as a neuromodulator, meaning it temporarily alters nerve signals to relax specific facial muscles. While most commonly known for treating forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines, it is also used medically to treat migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and TMJ.

What is botox made of?

Botox is made from a purified form of Botulinum toxin type A. This protein is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In cosmetic applications, the toxin is highly diluted and purified, making it safe for injection into muscles to block nerve signals without causing illness.

What is a botox lip flip?

A Botox lip flip is a non-surgical procedure where a small amount of Botox (usually 4–6 units) is injected into the cupid’s bow and corners of the upper lip. This relaxes the orbicularis oris muscle, causing the upper lip to slightly "flip" outward. The result is a fuller-looking upper lip without the added volume of dermal fillers.

How does botox work for wrinkles?

Botox works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that tells your muscles to contract. When injected into specific facial muscles, it prevents them from contracting or "scrunching" the skin. This relaxation smooths out existing dynamic wrinkles (caused by movement) and prevents new deep lines from forming.

How long does botox last in your face?

On average, Botox lasts for 3 to 4 months. Over time, the body metabolizes the neuromodulator, and nerve signals slowly return to the muscle, causing movement (and wrinkles) to reappear. First-time users may find it wears off slightly faster, while long-term users often see results lasting longer as the muscles weaken from disuse.

How long does botox last around the eyes?

Botox injected for "crow’s feet" (lines around the eyes) typically lasts about 3 to 4 months. However, because the muscles around the eyes are highly active when we smile and blink, some patients may notice movement returning slightly sooner than in less active areas like the forehead.

How long does botox take to work?

Botox is not immediate. You may start to see initial softening of lines within 3 to 5 days, but the full effect typically takes 10 to 14 days to develop. Most clinics recommend waiting a full two weeks before assessing the final result or deciding if you need a touch-up.

How often should you get botox?

Most providers recommend scheduling maintenance appointments every 3 to 4 months. The goal is to receive the next treatment just as muscle movement begins to return but before deep wrinkles have a chance to reform.

Is botox safe?

Yes, Botox is considered extremely safe when administered by a licensed and experienced medical professional (such as a dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or nurse injector). It was FDA-approved for cosmetic use in 2002 and has a long track record of safety. Side effects are generally mild and temporary, such as bruising or swelling at the injection site.

Is botox permanent?

No, Botox is not permanent. The effects are temporary and reversible. Unlike surgery, which makes structural changes, Botox only affects muscle activity for a short period. This makes it a low-commitment option for those trying anti-aging treatments for the first time.

Does botox wear off?

Yes, Botox always wears off. It is not a permanent change. As the neurotoxin is naturally broken down by the body, the nerve endings regenerate and muscle action is fully restored. If you stop getting treatments, your face will eventually return to its pre-Botox appearance.

What not to do after botox?

To ensure the best results and avoid complications (like the toxin migrating to unwanted muscles), follow these key rules for the first 24 hours:

- Do not rub or massage the treated area

- Do not lie down flat for 4 hours.

- Do not engage in strenuous exercise.

- Do not wear tight hats or headbands.

- Avoid excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga).

Can you lay down after botox?

You should wait at least 4 hours before lying down flat or bending over. Remaining upright prevents the toxin from migrating (moving) to other areas of the face, which could cause temporary issues like a droopy eyelid (ptosis).

Can you exercise after botox?

You should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least 24 hours. Elevated heart rate and blood pressure can increase swelling and bruising, and vigorous movement could theoretically cause the product to spread to unintended muscles.

Can you drink alcohol after botox?

It is recommended to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after your appointment (and ideally 24 hours before). Alcohol acts as a blood thinner, which significantly increases the risk of bruising at the injection sites.

Can you shower after botox?

Yes, you can shower and wash your face after Botox. However, keep the water lukewarm and avoid hot steam. Do not scrub or massage the treated areas while washing your face for the first 24 hours.

Can you wear makeup after botox?

Yes, you can gently apply makeup after your treatment, but it is better to wait a few hours to let the injection sites close. If you must apply makeup immediately, use clean brushes and use a very light touch to avoid putting pressure on the treated areas.

Can you get a facial after botox?

You should wait at least 1 to 2 weeks before getting a facial, microdermabrasion, or a chemical peel. Facials often involve massaging the face, which can displace the Botox and alter your results.

Can you fly after botox?

Yes, it is generally safe to fly after Botox. While changes in cabin pressure technically affect the body, there is no evidence that flying causes issues with Botox results. However, if you are prone to bruising, the dry air and pressure might slightly exacerbate swelling, but it is not medically dangerous.

Can you go in the sun after botox?

Brief sun exposure is fine, but you should avoid prolonged sun exposure and high heat for 24–48 hours. Heat causes vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), which can increase bruising and swelling. Always wear SPF to protect your skin regardless of treatment.
