Wearing daily sun protection isn't always the easiest or most comfortable feat, something the team at 8 West Clinic knows of well. After slapping tonnes of sticky, white mess onto our faces pre cycling or kite boarding, we started to think: there must be another way to help prevent pre mature aging while still enjoying our outdoor activities! Lo and behold, other options do exist, and we are thrilled to share them with you here. Here's how we recommend you comfortably wear daily sun protection.
Mineral Makeup
You might not realize this but there is actually a way you can add a daily sun protective component into your regime without changing a thing - except for the brand of makeup you wear. Some mineral makeup brands, such as Jane Iredale which we carry at 8 West Clinic, work wonderfully as a physical sunblock, which means the sun isn't penetrating your skin to begin with. Many Jane Iredale products are also waterproof, which means this is a great alternative to SPF for active, outdoor made-up days.
Tinted SPF
There are other products on the market that bring you the same benefits of slathering on SPF without the stick and hassle of adding makeup over top. Consider a product like Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer with SPF 30 by Zo Skin Health, also sold at 8 West Clinic. This miracle-working product acts as your makeup base, brining you a nice tint and silky matte finish, while giving you SPF protection simultaneously. It can be worn on its own, under makeup, or as your base.
Sun Protection Supplements
Do you know that sun protection actually comes in a bottle? While sun protection supplements like ZO Heliocare shouldn't be taken alone, throwing the SPF bottle to the side, they can improve your skin's naturally ability to protect against potentially harmful UV rays and usually offer an SPF 3 or 5, though they can't be measured because they aren't applied topically. Continue wearing your SPF and take these for a little boost.
A Sunhat
We know you've heard this tip before, but wearing a sunhat to shade your face on a hot sunny day is one of the most unbeatable tactics to ensure you're not getting too much UV exposure. Especially around noon when the sun is highest in the sky, be sure to wear your widest-brimmed hat. Sunglasses with UV protection do an equally as effective job at protecting the eyes from the sun's harmful rays.
Cover Up
Perhaps the best way to avoid sunburn is to simply cover up clothing. Pay attention to certain clothing lines that are now marking their tops with an SPF rating. Sun protection isn't always the easiest, but it is certainly something we should all be paying attention to on the daily.
