Benefits of this Otoplasty

Otoplasty is specifically designed to change the aesthetic appearance of the ears, and will not affect hearing nor go anywhere near the ear-canal. For those who are self-conscious about their ears and how it forms their overall appearance, may find Otoplasty the ideal surgery to:

  • Reposition the ears closer to the head
  • Reduce the appearance of large ears
  • Reshape bends in the cartilage
  • Create a more symmetrical appearance of the ears

How is Otoplasty Performed?

Otoplasty typically takes 2 hours to perform, and how it is performed depends on why the ears are positioned the way that they are. This is primarily based around the antihelical fold in your ear, as well as other pieces of ear cartilage. The antihelical fold is a curved, almost corkscrew-like fold in the visible upper-half of the ear, which could be seen to resemble a conch shell.

When the antihelical fold is underdeveloped, this may cause the ears to stick out. In other cases, there may be an excess amount of cartilage in the area where the ear connects to the head, pushing the ear forward and outward.

Depending on which condition is causing the prominence of the ear to stick forward, or perhaps a combination of the two, Dr. Buonassisi works to either create or enhance the antihelical fold. He makes a small incision behind the ear, then draws the ear closer to the head. He may also need to remove excess cartilage during the procedure. Once the required look is created, the surgeon then carefully places stitches to create folds and make small adjustments to give the ear a natural appearance.

How Long Does it Take to Recover from Otoplasty?

Recovery from Otoplasty requires you to wear a headband around the ears for the first two weeks post-surgery. It is normal to experience some bruising, discolouration and swelling around the ears. You can resume most normal activities, such as household chores, a brisk walk, or light exercise within a few days after the procedure. You can resume more vigorous, weight-based exercises once the headband has been removed.

Who is a Candidate for Otoplasty?

Most people who are self-conscious about protruding ears, and are realistic about the results, are an optimal candidate for Otoplasty. Your candidacy for this procedure will be discussed during your complimentary pre-consultation, where a photo review will be conducted, and Dr. Buonassisi will determine whether he can achieve your desired results with surgery.

What’s Covered in Your Pre-Consultation

Step 1: Request Your Complimentary Pre-Consultation Session with the 8 West Clinic Team

A pre-consultation session is a complimentary service that we recommend to anyone considering Otoplasty surgery. In your pre-consultation with a Patient Care Manager, they will conduct a photo review with yourself and Dr. Buonassisi on your behalf to confirm that you are a candidate for the procedure. They will also discuss the surgery cost, timeline, process as well as any other options that Dr. Buonassisi may have suggested achieving your desired results.

Step 2: Schedule Your Consultation with Dr. Buonassisi

Meet Dr. Buonassisi in person (or online if you are an out-of-town patient) for expectations setting and discussion. The surgical consultation is by far the most important part of the cosmetic surgery process because this is the communication tool that helps explain what can be achieved in surgery.

Dr. Buonassisi will share real patient Before and After photos to help illustrate what can be achieved with the particular surgery you are discussing. This is also your opportunity to ask him any questions

Step 3: Schedule Your Surgery and Receive Ongoing Care in Follow Up Visits

Our team of medical professionals and patient care managers are here to make your experience a smooth, informative and positive one. We manage all the details of your surgery and schedule a series of follow-up appointments to ensure you are healing well and are happy with your results! We are here to help answer all your questions about recovery.

Learn More with a Pre-Consultation

The decision to proceed with Otoplasty surgery should be made with the utmost level of care and attention. While it can be exciting to think about how you may look with a Otoplasty, it is important to be informed about both the risks and benefits of surgery.

A pre-consultation discussion is a complimentary service with our award-winning, knowledgeable and friendly patient care team, which we recommend to anyone considering any surgery.
